In 1965 she changed direction and went into nursing. She started her RMN with a 1-year placement at Virginia Water in Surrey. She then moved to Rauceby Hospital in December 1966. It was on 31st December 1966 that she met a young male nurse called Stuart Ian Barber. As the old family joke goes: they did indeed meet in a lunatic asylum! Having successfully obtained her RMN, in June 1969 she moved from Rauceby to Guy’s Hospital in London to complete her SRN. My father proposed in Greenwich Park in Easter 1970, and they were married on July 25th 1970. It was a lovely sunny day and a number of their bridesmaids remember the lemonade and Mrs Murphy’s entertainment. My parents’ first night of marriage was spent in the George Hotel in Grantham (now a shopping centre) for the princely sum of £4 17s 11d. In September 1970 Rosemarie became an SRN to compliment her RMN. She was promoted to ward sister at Whiteley Wood Clinic in Sheffield. They bought their first house in 1972 for £1500 and then added a new car for £1300.
